A Manual of the Art
of Bookbinding

by Jas. B. Nicolson

Book design by Tran Thanh Nha

Project Description
This book is quite a classic, having been originally published in the 19th century. Given its historical context, I aim to infuse this redesign project with a fresh, contemporary feel while still maintaining a sense of familiarity that is appropriate for a vintage book of this type.

During my redesign process, I conducted some research into the manual, and what truly impressed me was the prominence of marbled papers during that era—a decorative style I’ve often seen but never fully understood in modern times.

Therefore, I have chosen to feature the marbled print prominently as the main book cover, serving as a highlight and a visual "tease" for the reader. I have also added subtle accents related to the marbled paper on the book jacket itself.

Furthermore, the book contains numerous historical illustrations and ornamental motifs that I view as invaluable archival material. I have leveraged these assets and incorporated them into the interior layout of the book, allowing the reader to experience and feel the historical roots and authentic spirit of the bookbinding craft.
